Born and raised in Richmond VA, Emily Herr honed her talents as an artist at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She is now the founder of HerrSuite–an aptly titled mural design business where she sketches, designs, and paints murals big and small for business and personal commissioners.
A recent piece entitled “Girls, Girls, Girls” painted by Herr showcases women of all walks of life in a brilliant neon-colored display. Painted in her hometown of Richmond, the work sparked praised and has now spawned a tour on which Herr will travel the North East Atlantic spreading a message of female empowerment and artistic expression. In an interview with NPR Vermont, Herr said,
“My work and experience let me paint what I want to paint. I want to say something worth saying. Which is that women are people, which shouldn’t have to be said, but unfortunately, it’s feeling like it does of late.”
In the wake of a growingly hostile political climate in the United States, artists are once again at the forefront of social change lending their voices and their canvases to today’s tough and nuanced social challenges.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics), the United States was home to over 26,000 jobs for fine artists including sculptors, illustrators, painters, and muralists in 2014. That number is expected to grow by the thousands in the next 7-10 years.
Using art to convey a message is nothing new but it can be inspiring and empowering for those who create and engage it.
In a recent Facebook post, Herr wrote,
“THIS IS WHY I’M PAINTING WOMEN ON WALLS. It’s not always about physical size. It’s about a million things. But it’s always about taking up the SPACE in the world unapologetically, with speech, with presence, with emotion, with determination and decision and pride, with being exactly who you want to be, and who you are….”
Planned stops on Herr’s tour include Washington DC and New York City. Visit this artists website below to learn more.
